Embarking on the journey above the monastery, visitors are greeted by a forest adorned with ancient giants—among them, the venerable Kefallinian Fir (Abies Cephalonica) and the resilient Black Pine (Pinus Nigra). Along this path lies Europe's sole cedar forest (Juniperus drupacea), sprawling across 740 acres, designated as a cherished natural monument and integrated into the Natura 2000 network.
Descending towards the village, travellers trace the meandering course of the Tanos river. Nestled on the northern slopes of Mount Parnon, at an elevation of 952 m, lies the timeless village of Agios Petros. This traditional village has an endless supply of natural products and abundant water sources, known as ‘piges’. Upon arriving to Agios Petros, hikers will have the opportunity, if they wish, to enjoy a local traditional lunch from one of the few taverns.
Tucked away in the embrace of Mount Parnon, the waterfalls of Lepida stand as hidden gems among the region's natural wonders. Cascading gracefully over ash-colored rocks, the water plunges with remarkable vigor, enveloping the surroundings in a symphony of scents—wafts of oregano and sage permeate the air, while delicate plane trees cling to the rocky terrain, painting a picturesque tableau of untamed beauty. Nestled within the eponymous gorge of Parnon, the enchanting waterfalls boast impressive dimensions—the main cascade soaring to a height of 70 m, with its smaller counterpart measuring a still-impressive 45 m.
The journey commences from a traditional village nestled deep within the heart of Mount Parnon, where the landscape teems with bubbling springs and lush vegetation, set against a backdrop of tranquility at an altitude of 450 m.
Venturing into the gorge, traveller's trace the path alongside the babbling waters, ultimately encountering both majestic waterfalls. The return journey follows a different route, offering a fresh perspective on the surrounding terrain. While the initial stretch leading to the first waterfall poses minimal challenge, the subsequent leg demands a more rigorous approach, necessitating the use of mountaineering safety equipment to navigate safely.
The Luluga waterfall stands as a majestic testament to the natural beauty of Mount Parnon. Cascading down from a height of 35 meters, it lies concealed within a narrow yet awe-inspiring canyon nestled between two meticulously preserved villages of the mountainous region. Traversing through dense forests, the path winds along the canyon's slope, gradually leading deeper into its heart. As one draws nearer to this mystical locale, a palpable shift in temperature and humidity envelops the surroundings, setting the stage for a truly enchanting spectacle of nature's grandeur.
Perched along the northern border of Argolis and Kynouria, Mount Zavitsa commands attention with its rugged cliffs cascading towards the tranquil waters of the Argolic Gulf, while soaring to an impressive altitude of 974 m. Its storied past dates back to ancient times, evidenced by the remnants of an ancient path that once linked Argolis to Arcadia.
Known as the Anigraia Odos, this historic route was first chronicled by the esteemed traveler and geographer, Pausanias, during the 2nd century AD. Described in his comprehensive work on ancient Greece, the path served as a vital link between Argolis and ancient Thyrea, clinging precariously to the coastline in many sections. Remarkably, it remained the sole coastal route connecting these regions until 1953.
Embarking on a journey along the ancient road, travellers are treated to sweeping panoramas of the Argolic Gulf, with the cityscapes of Argos and Nafplion gracing the horizon. Upon reaching journey's end, a quaint fishing village, named Xiropigado, awaits, offering opportunities for leisurely swims and indulgent lunches, capping off an unforgettable exploration of Mount Zavitsa's timeless allure.
From the tranquil haven of Arnomousga on the slopes of Parnonas, situated at an elevation of 1420 meters, begins a captivating journey toward the summit of Megali Tourla, towering at 1935 m. Winding through dense forests of black pine and fir, the path leads to a serene plateau nestled amidst subalpine landscapes just shy of the peak. It is here, amidst the rejuvenating embrace of spring, that one can discover the Malevos tea, celebrated for its medicinal properties.
At this juncture, approximately 250 m below the summit, the group may choose to ascend further, guided by the collective spirit and weather conditions. Upon reaching the pinnacle, clear skies unveil a breathtaking panorama encompassing the Peloponnese, the Argolic Gulf and the majestic Mitroos Pelagos.
Following our descent back to the plateau, a moment of reprieve allows for reflection before we embark on our return journey, carrying with us memories of the awe-inspiring vistas and the invigorating ascent of Parnonas.
